Therapy That Sees All of You
LGBTQIA+ Affirming Services

Honoring Your Identity. Supporting Your Growth.

At Dandelion Wellness Counseling, we are committed to providing a safe, affirming, and inclusive space for individuals across the LGBTQIA+ community.

We understand that exploring identity, navigating relationships, managing anxiety, healing from trauma, and moving through life transitions can feel especially complex when layered with experiences of misunderstanding, rejection, minority stress, or the pressure to fit into spaces that have not always felt safe.

Our work is grounded in affirmation, respect, and authenticity. Therapy is a space where every part of who you are is welcomed, your identity is never something to be explained, defended, or fixed.

Naming It is the First Step to Taming It.

Common Anxiety Disorders We Treat

Do you feel like your symptoms don't fit into a neat box? You are not alone. Anxiety manifests in many forms, ranging from chronic, low-grade worry to sudden, debilitating panic. Understanding exactly how your anxiety operates is the first step toward dismantling it. Below are the specific types of anxiety disorders we treat most frequently in our West Islip practice.

Gender identity exploration & affirmation

We provide a safe, supportive space to help you openly explore, understand, and joyfully affirm your authentic gender identity.

Gender dysphoria

The "chronic worrier." You feel anxious about everything—money, health, family, work—often without a clear reason. It feels like a cloud of doom follows you everywhere.

Neurodivergence & LGBTQIA+ identity intersections

Explore the unique, intersecting experiences of being both neurodivergent and queer with an affirming therapist who truly understands.

Our Integrative Approach to Healing

Our clinicians utilize a strength-based, psychodynamic approach while integrating evidence-based tools including CBT, DBT, mindfulness, narrative therapy, and somatic strategies to help clients feel more grounded, empowered, and connected to themselves.

Just like the dandelion, growth can happen even in places that once felt uncertain. Our goal is to help you feel rooted in who you are while creating space for healing, resilience, and self-trust.  You deserve care where you feel fully seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between "LGBTQIA+ friendly" and "LGBTQIA+ affirming" therapy?

Being "friendly" means a therapist is accepting. Being "affirming" means we actively validate, celebrate, and advocate for your identity. We do not view your sexual orientation or gender identity as a "problem to be fixed." Instead, we see it as a beautiful, core part of who you are. An affirming therapist understands the unique societal challenges, minority stress, and systemic barriers you may face, so you don't have to spend your sessions educating us.

Do we only have to talk about my gender or sexuality in therapy?

Not at all! While we are here to fully support your identity exploration, coming out process, or transition if that's what you need, we also know that you are a whole person. If you want to focus on work stress, general anxiety, relationship dynamics, or trauma, we can do exactly that. Your identity is simply honored and respected as part of your whole self while we work on whatever goals you choose.

Do I need to be "out" to start therapy?

Absolutely not. Therapy is a completely confidential, safe space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. Whether you are fully out, just starting to question things, or choosing to remain private for your safety or comfort, you are welcome exactly as you are. There is no "right" way to identify, and there is no timeline or pressure here.

I am neurodivergent and part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Can you help me navigate both?

Yes. We understand that being both neurodivergent (such as Autistic or having ADHD) and LGBTQIA+ comes with its own unique, intersecting experiences. We provide a sensory-friendly, neuro-affirming, and identity-affirming environment where you don't have to mask your neurotype or hide your true self. You can bring your full, authentic self to every session.
